How Ledger protects your keys — plain language
When you create a wallet on a Ledger device, the private keys used to sign transactions are generated inside a protected secure element. The keys never leave the device. Instead of sending a private key to the internet, the device returns a cryptographic signature proving you authorized a transaction. This means even if your computer is compromised, an attacker cannot sign transactions without the physical device and the PIN.
What the recovery phrase does
The recovery phrase (24 words) is a human-readable encoding of your wallet’s seed. If your device is lost, damaged or stolen, anyone with this phrase can restore your funds on a new device. That’s why storing the phrase safely — offline and out of sight — is essential.
Common user mistakes to avoid
- Typing your recovery phrase into a web form or chat.
- Storing the recovery phrase in cloud storage, email, or a photo library.
- Buying hardware wallets from unknown marketplaces where tampering could occur.
